Summer is right around the corner, and WESC has two more exciting
events planned this year:
#1)
WHAT: “THE RIVER IN YOUR BACKYARD” SEINING PROGRAM
WHEN: Sunday, May 22nd, from 2:30-4 pm
WHERE: Beczak Environmental Education Center in Yonkers
WHY: Find out what lives under the waves by using a large seine
net that is dragged through the water to catch fish and other remarkable
Hudson River creatures.
We will be using scientific equipment to conduct water testing,
and find out how Seasons, Temperature & Salinity are connected
in the Hudson River estuary. Our Beczak educator will also discuss
current environmental issues on the Hudson River. Waders will be
provided for all.

WHAT: “WESC SAILING FESTIVAL” Celebrate the end of
finals with SAILING, LIVE MUSIC, FOOD AND FRIENDS!!!
WHEN: Saturday, June 11, at 12:00 noon, Sailing starts at 2 pm
WHERE: Riverfront Park in Beacon
WHY: Celebrate the end of the school year with a sailing trip on
the Hudson River aboard the Woodie Guthrie. There will also be
live music, and food. We will also begin planning for next year’s
WESC events, programs, and activities.
This is a great way to introduce your friends to WESC, so invite
anyone you’d like!

WESC Eco-Club Activities:
White Plains HS Eco-Club
May 20th
White Plains High School is having an after school children's program
on May 20 at Church Street school. We'll have stations set up that
have an environmental theme. Our stations usually include: planting
beans, making bird feeders, earth trivia/charades, and drawing.
Our programs usually start around 3:45-4ish and end around 5. Anyone
from WESC is welcome to participate!!!

Below is information on some great summer-time opportunities for
high school students interested in outdoor adventures and environmental
excursions:
FIELD STUDIES PROGRAM ~ HAWAII
August 4-9, 2005 ~ Hawai'i
Application Deadline: May 30, 2005
This field study will include
snorkeling and fish identification on the coral reefs, studies
of the
local watershed, environmental monitoring and much more. National
Geographic photographers will work with the students on photo
documentation of their field experiences and the development of
a youth
media project.

MACHU PICCHU EXCURSION FOR STUDENTS
Deadline: June 30th 2005
Seeking Blind & Able-Bodied Students for Machu Picchu Excursion.
Join
Erik Weihenmayer, the first blind man to summit Mount Everest,
and
Global Explorers' staff for a spectacular trek through the magical
land
of the Incas. This one-time-only 12-day experience will team blind,
disabled and able-bodied high school students for an unparalleled
leadership, teamwork, and learning adventure. A highlight will
be a six
day trek through lush mountains and ancient Inca ruins to Machu
Picchu.

APPRENTICE ECOLOGIST PROGRAM
Apprentice Ecologist Program from the Nicodemus Wilderness Project
designed for youth to get involved in protecting the wild lands
and
waters that sustain Earth's biodiversity and ecosystems by working
together on wilderness stewardship and conservation efforts. Goal
of
program is to engage 1000 kids and young adults in the Apprentice
Ecologist Program by 2006. Participants receive a signed official
certificate and their story is published on the website.
