II. Here are some things that I thought would be a good idea for
Environmental Clubs in your schools to do...

A. Against drilling in the Arctic..

As you may already know, the Arctic Refuge is open to drilling since a few
weeks ago. The Congress is trying to pass a bill that will prohibit any harmful
activity there. Show your support by wearing green ribbons. Get your
environmental club, students, teachers, parents, neighbors, ANYONE who expresses
concern for saving the ecosystem in the Arctic Refuge from oil drilling companies.
Visit the web address below to tell your friends about this:

B. For the artists who support the environment...

The Dangers of Modern Art
March 2005
Read Greentips online at http://www.ucsaction.org/ctt.asp?u=3083198&l=83776

Some art supplies contain ingredients that are harmful to both humans and the
environment. These include naturally occurring heavy metals such as lead,
cobalt, cadmium, and manganese, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as
turpentine, xylene, acetone, and toluene. So, how can you express yourself
creatively while protecting the environment?

Know what you're buying. Art supplies that can cause chronic health problems
must be labeled according to federal guidelines. In addition, the Art and
Creative Materials Institute (ACMI) has developed two supplemental labels to help
guide your purchasing decisions. See the website for these labels and more
info.

Talking to the chair person of the art department in your school about the
materials the school buys won't be a bad idea!

III. Sorry for the loooong email. Enjoy the week.

Sincerely,
Chiaki Kurihara
WESC Secretary
