On October 24, we held our retreat at Cranberry
Lake Preserve (pictures will be posted soon on the website at
fcwc.org). Fourteen students from Ossining High School, Ossining
Walkabout, Hackley, Mamaroneck, New Rochelle, Scarsdale, John
Jay and Harrison High Schools came, cut porcelain berry, wisteria
and oriental bittersweet vines and cleared truckloads of garbage
out of the woods. At our meeting, we announced upcoming November
and December programs, and discussed programming ideas for the
year ahead, including how to advocate for the environment at
the town level and as consumers, environmental education for
elementary school students, and stargazing. Most students reported
that they were trying to improve recycling within their schools
(for information on grant opportunities for improving school
environment, and other opportunities, see the fcwc. org website
for listings soon). WESC officers emphasized the role that WESC
can play through its website and listserve in reporting the local
efforts and initiatives of environmentally minded students across
the county.
