Federated Conservationists of Westchester County, Inc. (FCWC) has been dedicated to environmental planning and education since 1965. FCWC was founded by diverse groups of concerned citizens interested in speaking with one voice on regional environmental matters.

FCWC goals include protecting wetlands and wildlife habitats; ensuring adherence to environmental regulations; protecting and enhancing Westchester’s natural resources: it's air, land and water; promoting mass transit and fighting automobile dependent sprawl; and safeguarding and expanding our county’s parks.

Encouraging a regional perspective on environmental matters, FCWC acts as a clearing house for information. It is a liaison between citizens and various levels of government, particularly the county legislature. Board members and the executive director testify frequently at hearings, and they serve on advisory committees. Officials are encouraged to consider a regional perspective for land-use planning and FCWC’s issue-oriented board members represent all parts of the county and monitor specific environmental concerns.

FCWC is in the forefront of environmental education in Westchester. Its bi-monthly newspaper which covers the many environmental issues and groups in Westchester, Westchester Environment, is widely distributed to libararies, schools and government officials as well as to FCWC members and the business community. Several conferences on topical matters are sponsored annually by FCWC. The Westchester Environmental Directory published by FCWC provides a ready reference source for the many groups working on environmental protection and preservation.

Reaching out into the community, FCWC started a high school student environmental council for schools across the county which provides opportunites for environmental education, stewardship and advocacy training. To more effectively reach the communites in which the students live and to engage a larger segment of the population in environmental preservation, the high school program has been expanded to include an intergenerational component with senior citizens mentoring and working alongside the students on stewardship and advocacy.

It is FCWC's goal to engage the people in Westchester in taking the steps necessary to save our earth for future generations.
